024: Learning new skills for your side project

Learning new skills is something that goes hand-in-hand with side projects. Often we have ideas for things that involve either expanding on the skills we currently have, or learning something totally new. In this episode we discuss our approach to learning and chat about the benefits of adding new things to your skillset.

key takeaways

It’s easier to learn something when you have a goal or a project to use the skill for. If there’s a skill you’d like to learn but haven’t been able to find the time, give yourself a reason to set aside the time for it and complete a project with the skill. Set a deadline for yourself.

Get to know your learning style. Everyone learns in different ways, so try a few different options to find the way that works best for you. Try online courses, watching videos on YouTube or collaborating with someone who already has the skill.

Learning new things is always going to be valuable. You don’t always have to act on every idea you have, but if you do decide to add something new to your skillset, think of the time you set aside for learning as an investment in your future.

Don’t get too comfortable. Push yourself; try new things and learn from the road-blocks you hit. There is always more to learn and it’s great to be a curious person who is constantly trying to improve.
